✦Beyond the obvious

What the locals know

Less-obvious places worth knowing about while you are in the city. Save the ones you like to your wishlist.

01

Le Van Tam Park

This neighbourhood park occupies the site of a former colonial cemetery and now functions as a green everyday space for walking, exercise and local events. It pairs naturally with Tan Dinh Church, the market or nearby cafés when a route needs shade and recovery.

Open public park

02

Thanh Da Peninsula

Thanh Da feels unusually semi-rural for a location close to central Saigon, with waterways, small lanes, gardens and local restaurants. It is best treated as a slow half-day escape for repeat visitors rather than inserted into a tightly packed first-time itinerary.

Open area

03

Mong Bridge

This mint-green colonial-era footbridge crosses the Ben Nghe canal near the financial district and gives a low-key view toward old warehouses and new towers. It is more neighbourhood connector than headline sight, which makes it valuable as a compact hidden-gem pause.

Open public space

04

Phu Chau Floating Temple

Set on a small river island reached by boat, this colourful temple offers a markedly different atmosphere from central Saigon’s better-known pagodas. The journey is part of the experience, but river access and service hours make it a date-dependent hidden-gem choice.

05

FITO Museum of Traditional Vietnamese Medicine

FITO’s carved timber interiors, reconstructed pharmacy and collection of medical tools explain traditional Vietnamese medicine through a surprisingly atmospheric private museum. The visit works best for travellers interested in material culture, herbal traditions and a quieter alternative to central headline museums.

08:30-17:00 daily

06

Quan Am Pagoda - Cho Lon

Smaller and less visited than nearby Thien Hau, Quan Am Pagoda rewards close attention to carved wood, roof ornament and active Cantonese worship. It deepens a Chợ Lớn morning without requiring a major detour and helps avoid reducing Chinatown to a single temple.

07

Giac Lam Pagoda

Founded in the eighteenth century, Giac Lam is among the city’s oldest pagodas and preserves a more spacious temple compound than central shrines. The layered halls, stupas and shaded grounds justify the longer transfer for travellers seeking deeper Buddhist heritage.

08

Thu Thiem Saigon River Embankment

Across the river from District 1, the Thu Thiem embankment provides a broad skyline view back toward Bitexco and the colonial centre. Sunset, city lights and informal riverside activity make it an excellent low-cost viewpoint reached by short taxi or water connection.
